National Bike to Work Day
Today, the third friday of May, marks the date for National Bike to Work Day. As cities and regions across the states hold advocacy programs and rides, we here in Philadelphia are holding similar events.
Our mayor, Nutter will lead by example and commute to City Hall by bicycle. All were invited to join the Mayor on his ride, starting from the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art at 8:30 a.m. All went well, except for the rain. Even with fenders as I have, it was impossible to avoid getting wet.
Even though, the weather was a little unpermitting here, I am glad to see the effort did not go unrewarded in other cities. San Franciso held there event yesterday, with great success. The SF Bicycle Coalition reports there being twice as many bicycles as cars headed downtown on San
Francisco’s Market Street. “Bicyclists made up 64% of the eastbound traffic at Market St. & Van Ness Ave., while motorists comprised 32% between 8am
and 9am today.” Press Release here
Riding a bicycle is a healthy, low-cost, and environmentally friendly form of transportation and recreation. With the cost of gas ever rising, why not switch to something a little more sensible, especially if you live in a city.
I’ve been in living and riding here for almost the past four years, with a work commute of over ten miles. I yet to regret selling my car. Personally I get more than a sense of being healthy and being able to provide my own means, a great sense of clarity can also be found. Living healthy has great effects on the mind, and commuting via bicycle is the perfect way. If you live in the area, join me for a ride.
